Boy Scouts Recognized at Friends of Scouting Breakfast

Mayor Bach is committed to helping youth develop to assume positions of responsibility and leadership. That’s one of the reasons why he attended the Pikes Peak Council’s Friends of Scouting Breakfast recognizing 2012 Heroism and Summit Award Recipients.

More than 600 gathered to recognize Jordan Evans with a Heroism Award for potentially saving his grandmother’s life. He is also one of nine Scouts selected from 2.5 million nationwide to deliver the Report to the Nation to Congress. They also recognized 2012 Summit Award Recipients, Kyle Winchell, Connor Gosselin, Donald Sotomayor-Seurer and Cameron Hickert.

The Pikes Peak Council Summit Award winners are outstanding in their own unique way. They are nominated by unit leadership and include letters of recommendation from teachers, Scout leaders, volunteer coordinators, activity leaders and others. Each recipient has made significant contributions to Scouting and their community.

The keynote speaker, Ron Young, was an Iraqi Freedom POW, Apache helicopter pilot and training officer in the U.S. military. His story of capture, imprisonment and eventual rescue is a testament to teamwork, leadership and perseverance. He is also an Eagle Scout.

In 2011, the Friends of Scouting breakfast helped the Pikes Peak Council raise over $350,000, which was $60,000 more than in 2010. This year, the breakfast alone raised over $300,000, contributing a significant amount to the 2012 goal of $380,000.

Mayor Bach Recognizes Maria Ambuul with Spirit Award

American Heritage Girl, Maria Ambuul, and her family met with Mayor Bach, Suzi Bach and Councilman Tim Leigh to receive a Spirit of the Springs Celebrate Award for her achievement.

Maria, a high school senior, recently became the first-ever Colorado recipient of an American Heritage Girls “Stars and Stripes” award, which is equivalent to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Award.

 

Ambuul completed a combination of badge work, religious recognition and service to earn the award. She completed a 100-hour service project for her parish in Colorado Springs, leading an effort to build an outdoor shrine.

Her family and friends (shown below) participated in the recognition event. “I am very impressed with Maria. She exemplifies the dedication, commitment and vision we want to encourage in our youth,” said Mayor Bach. “She is a great example of leadership in our community.”

Only 47 other girls nationwide have earned a Stars and Stripes award — the highest achievement an American Heritage Girl can earn.

Tiffany Calabaza Receives Spirit of Springs Recognition

Mayor Steve Bach has recognized Colorado College Senior, Tiffany Calabaza, with a Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Certificate for bringing renewable energy to her hometown of Kewa, New Mexico.

“Tiffany is a great example of the excellence and vision our young people possess. Tiffany worked with advisors and fellow students to make a meaningful improvement for family and friends living hundreds of miles away. Our goal is to develop and engage talented young leaders like Tiffany,” said Mayor Bach.

The White House recently recognized Tiffany for persuading tribal leaders to convert a community windmill into a solar water-pumping station, thus creating a more efficient method to supply drinking water to livestock. The project will continue in collaboration with Colorado College students and Kewa tribal members.

Mayor Bach recognizes noteworthy achievements with Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” awards when a volunteer activity or noteworthy achievement brings great honor and pride to the City of Colorado Springs or a citizen is distinguished at a state, national or international level.
