I know that it was a sustained effort because I tried for several months and got nowhere. I can't express my overwhelming gratitude to Patti and your office for their work in this matter. Thank you for all your exceptional service." -Citizen Comment

Suzi Bach Tours Marion House Soup Kitchen

Mayor Bach’s wife, Suzi, learned a whole lot more about the Catholic Charities’ Marion House than just how many meals are served. Even though the Soup Kitchen did serve more than 208,000 meals last year alone, they provide a smorgasboard of benefits to those in need.

(L-R: President and CEO Mark Rohlena, Sam Edwards-VP of Poverty Reduction Services, Suzi Bach, Jeremy Silva-Security Supervisor and Operations Manager, Eric Evans-Director of Marion House Client Services)

The property and buildings were donated by the Tutt family and began by serving 120 meals per day. Last year their food budget was $35,000. They have 19 staff and over 1600 volunteers each month. Collaboration with other community organizations is key to being able to provide resources for every need.

They want to figure out the person’s needs but first they try to find out if the person is safe. They provide a meal and then ease into the assessment. They turn away those who are intoxicated and violent behaviors are not tolerated and will get someone banned.

“We try to meet them where they’re at,” said Jeremy Silva. “We try to serve everything we can; the main ingredient we serve here is love!”

Marion House is the largest soup kitchen in the state and is seen as a model agency for new soup kitchens. Some volunteers have been there for 27 years and there are 50 volunteers who run all the operations.

Their calls have decreased 65% since collaborating with law enforcement.

Food that’s going bad, like lettuce, gets donated to the zoo so nothing goes to waste.

We were out of coffee, so we put it in every church bulletin and before we knew it we were flooded the coffee. So we call this (below) The Wall of Coffee!” said Sam Edwards.

Peak Producers, a group of the top 10% of all Realtors in the Pikes Peak area formed a partnership with the Marion House to sponsor families in need.

Through the Life Support Program, low income pregnant women and families with young children receive material goods, education, support, information and referrals. Parents have an opportunity to learn Parenting with Love and Logic®, receive financial counseling, and attend classes taught by Security Service Federal Credit Union. Their typical family has an average household income of $7800/year.

Eric said, “We are teaching people to fish. Close to 150 people a day get their mail delivered here. Through Client Services, we assess their needs, help them get get their birth certificates, etc. and help them achieve financial literacy education.”

 ”Partnerships make it happen!”

Following the tour, Suzi Bach expressed her appreciation for the work the Catholic Charities Marion House does for others. “I saw immediately the connection people have with you. We’ll keep this partnership going and it will be an honor to come back and volunteer!”

Suzy Luff and Hats 4 Hope Receive Celebration Award

Suzy Luff just wanted a warmer, substantial hat for her preemie brother; the one they put on his tiny head was thin and made from a sock.

That motivation led her to knit hats for preemie babies and enlist volunteers to knit even more hats. Her goal was to reach 1000 by the end of her senior year in high school, but she’s already surpassed 2600.

From that effort, ”Hats-4-Hope” was born and those brightly colored knitted hats are donated to a local hospital.

Suzy Luff was named one of Colorado’s top two youth volunteers for 2012 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.

This high school senior was also honored with a Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award, presented by Suzi Bach at her Colorado Springs Christian High School.

Why do preemie babies need hats in the first place?

“The head is the temperature control of the body, and to keep a steady temperature, a premature baby often needs a hat to keep in its body heat,” she said.

Her family and those at Colorado Springs Christian School are very proud of her initiative and compassion. Pictured above are Suzy’s parents,  Pam and Bob Luff. CSCS Superintendent, Roland Derenzo and his wife, Sally, stand by Suzy as she proudly displays her Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award Certificate.

High School Principal, Tami Bultje, and Guidance Counselor, Becky Kenney, were delighted to see Suzy receive the Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award and to have been part of the team that nominated Suzy for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

The Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award is presented when a volunteer activity or noteworthy achievement has brought great honor and pride to the City of Colorado Springs or has been distinguished at a state, national or international level.

Mayor Bach Recognizes Maria Ambuul with Spirit Award

American Heritage Girl, Maria Ambuul, and her family met with Mayor Bach, Suzi Bach and Councilman Tim Leigh to receive a Spirit of the Springs Celebrate Award for her achievement.

Maria, a high school senior, recently became the first-ever Colorado recipient of an American Heritage Girls “Stars and Stripes” award, which is equivalent to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Award.

Ambuul completed a combination of badge work, religious recognition and service to earn the award. She completed a 100-hour service project for her parish in Colorado Springs, leading an effort to build an outdoor shrine.

Her family and friends (shown below) participated in the recognition event. “I am very impressed with Maria. She exemplifies the dedication, commitment and vision we want to encourage in our youth,” said Mayor Bach. “She is a great example of leadership in our community.”

Only 47 other girls nationwide have earned a Stars and Stripes award — the highest achievement an American Heritage Girl can earn.

Suzi Bach Reads to Fort Carson Patriot Elementary Students

March 2nd was Read Across America Day, a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd. It also happened to be Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participated, including elementary students at Patriot Elementary. Mayor Bach’s wife, Suzi Bach, was there with other volunteers and read The Foot Book to three classrooms of youngsters.

“Wet foot, dry foot, low foot, high foot…” was written by Dr. Seuss to help children learn the concept of opposites. To reinforce the theme, many students came in Dr. Seuss character costume, including the young lady below who appeared as “Cindy Lou Who”. Classrooms were decorated with tributes to Dr. Seuss. And Suzi Bach met quite a few “cats” in their hats that morning!

Patriot Elementary is part of Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 and is located on Fort Carson, home to some very patriotic people. “Patriot Pride” was visible throughout the school from the colorful banners and flags on walls and windows.

Dr. Seuss must have had these students in mind when he penned, “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Lexi Kluge Recognized with Spirit of the Springs Certificate

Mayor Steve Bach’s Spirit of the Springs initiative is on a roll! Mayor Bach’s wife, Suzi, recently presented a Spirit of the Springs “Celebrate” Certificate to a very dynamic Horizon Middle School student.

Eighth grader, Lexi Kluge, took her passion and compassion for supporting our troops and turned it into a community-wide project.

On a recent trip to Texas, Lexi saw firsthand the sacrifice soldiers make for our country. “I saw some soldiers who were recovering from being hit in roadside bombings, seeing their injuries and what they’re going through is so powerful.”

So Lexi decided she would do something to help: her goal was to collect enough donated items to stuff 100 stockings to send to soldiers serving overseas during the holidays.

Lexi is one of those special individuals who sees an opportunity to help others and pursues it with enthusiasm and commitment. Thanks to Lexi for brightening up the holidays for our troops and also being an inspiration to others!
