On an icy day in December, Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach and Olympian Rachael Flatt braved wintry weather to promote the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, coming to Colorado Springs February 9-12, 2012.
“We are the proud home of the US Olympic Committee and 23 National Governing Bodies. As you know, Colorado Springs has a rich history in figure skating and we’re very thankful to have the Broadmoor Skating Club and World Arena Ice Hall here,” said Mayor Bach.
Rachael was 2010 U.S. National Champion and member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team.
To promote the event in a big, BIG way, a mural of Rachael can be seen at the corner of Tejon and Pikes Peak in downtown Colorado Springs.
She was very excited to see her “larger-than-life” self skating above the heads of friends and fans! She said, “I’m pretty flabbergasted; this is a wonderful honor!”
Rachael is a student at Stanford University and a Cheyenne Mountain High School graduate.
Rachael said she’s been skating since she was four years old. “Training never gets easier, but it’s definitely worth the work.”
It’s definitely paid off. For a tiny person, she certainly has a giantsized share of the “Spirit of the Springs”!
