Not many high school basketball teams can claim they’ve played 693 games together, some beginning as early as 4th grade. But that’s exactly how long members of the Air Academy High School Girls Basketball Team have worked together as a team.
Their other claim to fame is winning the 4A State Championships – a first ever for their school and a distinction that brought honor to their hometown of Colorado Springs.
Mayor Bach enjoyed talking with the team before he awarded Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” certificates to each player. Suzi Bach and Council Member Angela Dougan (District 2) joined in celebrating the girls’ accomplishment. Winning the 4A State Championship was a rarity for the Pikes Peak region.
Mayor Bach said, “We’re so very proud of you. You’ve brought a great deal of pride to your school as well as to Colorado Springs.”
Mayor and Suzi Bach were very surprised and pleased to receive honorary jerseys from a very appreciative team.
Principal Toria McGill and Athletic Director Diane Shuck were on stage to commend the team again for their achievement.
Coach Bob Wingett said, “We’re very proud of the time and effort these young ladies have committed to achieve this goal. No matter what, they’re always enjoying the ride.”
The Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” award is awarded when a noteworthy accomplishment brings great honor and pride to the community.
Mayor Bach said, “Consider the possibilities for our community when young people like this inspire and encourage others to strive for excellence. They deserve much success in the future.”
