Mayor Bach’s recent visit to the Springs Rescue Mission reinforced his belief that Colorado Springs is a caring community of people who want to make this a better place.
“The work you are doing here is inspirational to me. It’s heartwarming to see how we can do more to help one another,” Mayor Bach said.
Larry Yonker, Chief Development Officer, believes they’ve only just begun. “We work with people who have made poor life choices, but we help them take personal responsibility for building a better life. We help broken people,” he said.
Joe Vazquez, a CEO with over 16 years in the Rescue Mission field says their location on the south side of the City serves them well. They’ve purchased property on N. Nevada near I-25 and are in the midst of renovating an old hotel.
“We’re working on a Family Crisis Center to provide a stabilizing location for mothers with children. Unfortunately, it’s a large segment of those in crisis. The Center is still under construction, but when completed it will provide a place where mothers and children can get their lives back on track. We also help a lot of Veterans and are seeing more Vets in their 20′s than in the past.”
They hope to build a recreation center near Dorchester Park. They also hope to build a Rescue Mission model that other cities can emulate.
