November Mayor’s Counsel Meeting

On Thursday, November 15th, Mayor Steve Bach met with Council Members Scott Hente, Merv Bennett, Angela Dougan, Tim Leigh and Brandy Williams  for the monthly Mayor’s Counsel meeting.  Agenda topics included: helping the homeless, fire mitigation, a CSFD dental clinic, and the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

Suzi Bach discusses forthcoming plans to assist the homeless

The discussion on a new initiative to help the homeless was led by Suzi Bach. Suzi is working closely with Mayor Bach, Councilman Bennett and the El Pomar Foundation to research best practices from cities all over the nation. A final plan is currently being developed and will be presented early next year. “We wouldn’t be where we are right now without the hard work of Suzi Bach,” said Councilman Bennett.

Fire mitigation education is a main priority of the CSFD and City Communications. The Fire Department and the Mayor are working together in a timely manner on new fire mitigation rules going forward, including finding a balanced position for people who will be rebuilding in the areas impacted by the Waldo Canyon Fire. City Communications is working in concert with State and Federal agencies to provide public service information on fire mitigation and emergency preparedness. The Mayor stressed the importance of over-communicating information and working in-sync with the County to pursue grant money to help achieve our emergency safety goals.

Fire Chief Rich Brown made a brief report on a new free dental clinic program started by the Fire Department in partnership with Senior Mobile Dental. Set up at Station #8, this clinic is designed to assist the elderly and uninsured. Next, the Mayor stressed the importance of taking a fresh look at the City’s Comprehensive Plan. “The Plan should target 3 priority areas, Downtown, Southeastern Colorado Springs, and the UCCS region. More efficient building and development regulations and a special focus on transit, public safety, code enforcement, and urban renewal areas need to be the focus of a new Comprehensive Plan,” said Mayor Bach.

The meeting concluded with a brief update from Chief of Staff Laura Neumann on the progress of the Pension Solutions Team. “We are exploring every option to keep the City sustainable and will have a report ready by the end of January 2013,” said Neumann. The final Mayor’s Counsel meeting of 2012 is scheduled for 10am Thursday, December 13th at the Police Operations Center.
