On Friday, December 14th, Mayor Steve Bach swore in three newly promoted Colorado Springs Police Officers to the rank of Sergeant – Carlos Sandoval, Doug Smook, and Troy Ward. Civilian Joseph Thornburg was also promoted to Impound Facility Supervisor. Please join the Mayor and Police Chief Pete Carey in congratulating these new promotees.
Carlos Sandoval began his career with the Colorado Springs Police Department on April 4, 1994. He has served in the Falcon Division; Sand Creek Division; Metro, Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence Division; and Specialized Enforcement Tactical Enforcement Unit. He has earned one Medal of Valor, one Ace Award, two CREATE Certificate of Appreciation Awards, two Officer of the Month Awards, four Distinguished Service Awards, five Written Commendations, eleven Certificate of Appreciation Awards, and twenty-two Commander’s Commendations. He has also received numerous letters of appreciation for doing presentations in the community. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology/Social Welfare with a Minor in Psychology from Adams State College in 1992.
Doug Smook began his career with the Colorado Springs Police Department on February 1, 1988. He has served in the Park Police, Gold Hill Division, Stetson Hills Division, Specialized Enforcement Tactical Enforcement Unit, and Patrol Support Section. He has earned one Medal of Valor, one Certificate of Recognition, one Officer of the Month Award, one Certificate of Appreciation Award, one Distinguished Service Award, one Department Commendation, three ACE Awards, thirteen Written Commendations, and sixteen Commander’s Commendations. He earned his Associate of Applied Science from Pikes Peak Community College in 2010.
Troy Ward began his career with the Colorado Springs Police Department on January 21, 1999. He has served in the Sand Creek Division Neighborhood Patrol Unit, Falcon Division, Stetson Hills Division, and the Investigations Division Property Crimes and Registered Sex Offenders – School Assistance Team Units. He has earned one Certificate of Appreciation Award, one Leadership Award, one Adopt-A-School Officer Program Award, one Staff Member of the Week Award, and nine Commander’s Commendations. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (Criminology) from the University of Southern Colorado at Pueblo in 1997.
Joseph Thornburg began his career with the Colorado Springs Police Department on February 18, 1997. He was hired in the Metro Crime Lab as a Crime Scene Technician and then transferred to Evidence Technician on April 30, 2012. He has earned one Written Commendation, one Certificate of Appreciation, and two Commander’s Commendations. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of the State of New York in 1988.
