More than one exciting event occurred at the World Arena Ice Hall this week centered on excellence and figure skating.
First, the United States Olympic Committee designated the World Arena Ice Hall as a United States Olympic Committee Official Olympic Training Site. USOC CEO, Scott Blackmun (below), announced the designation to a crowded room of figure skaters, coaches, community leaders and media.
The designation makes the World Arena Ice Hall one of 13 USOC Official Training Sites in the United States. The designation benefits the City of Colorado Springs, U.S. Figure Skating, resident coaching staff and World Arena Ice Hall by continuing to draw world-class figure skaters to Colorado Springs. Mayor Bach, along with Donna Nelson, then presented a Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award to recognize two champion figure skaters. Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, who teamed up in 2011 became U.S. pair skating champions in 2012.
Mayor Bach presents a Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award when the recipient lives or participates in an activity within the confines of the City of Colorado Springs. The recipient has also performed a noteworthy achievement which has brought great honor and pride to the City of Colorado Springs or been distinguished at a state, national or international level.
