At a press conference on Tuesday, October 23rd, members of Mayor Steve Bach’s Executive Team presented the City’s Initial After Action Report on the Waldo Canyon Fire to the media.
Emergency Management Director Bret Waters, Fire Chief Rich Brown, Police Chief Pete Carey and Chief of Staff Laura Neumann were on hand to address specific areas of the report and take questions.
According to the Executive Summary: ”This [Initial] After Action Report will provide a broad overview of the incident, resulting strengths of the response and recommendations for change.” Among the strengths listed are: good public safety collaboration, personnel, training and exercise, public safety response and planning. Some of the recommendations for change listed are: better internal and external communication, real-time documentation and logistical and incident management.
The Mayor concluded the meeting by thanking everyone who worked so hard on the fire. He also reminded citizens who live in wildland urban interface areas that fire danger still remains. He encouraged them to practice wildfire mitigation techniques around their homes.
