On Wednesday evening, August 29th, dozens of people gathered outside of the City Administration Building for the Mayor’s Arts Walk. After enjoying some lemonade and butterfly cookies from Bliss Bakery in Rockrimmon, the Mayor led the group on a tour of some of the pieces in this year’s Butterflies and Friends collection.
This collection is a community service initiative led by The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs to raise awareness and funding to ensure that children receive essential arts programs in school. Artists transform 31 large-scale metal butterfly “templates” into original works of art. Each butterfly sculpture is displayed around the downtown area from June to September.
The butterflies will be auctioned at a gala event to be held at Cheyenne Mountain Resort on September 22. Proceeds from the auction go to D11 Schools’ arts programs and the Rotary Club’s Community Service Fund. For raffle ticket purchase information, visit www.ButterfliesandFriends.org.
Sponsored by the City of Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Art Council (PPAC) and the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR), the Arts Walks are a great opportunity to see the unique pieces up close and to interact with the artists that create them.
The final Arts Walk with Mayor Bach will be held on Wednesday, September 19th.
