Mayor Bach to Present Award to Local Student
Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach will present a Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” Award to Maria Ambuul, a 17-year-old high school senior, who recently became the first-ever Colorado recipient of an American Heritage Girls “Stars and Stripes” award, which is equivalent to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Award.
Mayor Bach, along with Councilmember Tim Leigh, will present the Celebration Award on Monday, March 5, at 4:30 p.m. in the Mayor’s Office of the City Administration Building (30 S. Nevada Avenue Suite 601).
Ambuul completed a combination of badge work, religious recognition and service to earn the award. She completed a 100-hour service project for her parish in Colorado Springs, leading an effort to build an outdoor shrine. Only 47 other girls nationwide have earned a Stars and Stripes award — the highest achievement an American Heritage Girl can earn.
“I am very impressed with Maria. She exemplifies the type of dedication, commitment and vision we want to encourage for the youth of Colorado Springs,” said Mayor Bach. “I would point to her as an example young people can follow.”
The Spirit of the Springs “Celebration” award is presented by the Mayor of Colorado Springs. It recognizes a noteworthy achievement which has brought great honor and pride to the City of Colorado Springs or has been distinguished at a state, national or international level.
